Key Responsibilities
- Navigational Watchkeeping: The Third Officer is responsible for carrying out independent navigational watches on the bridge, typically from 0800–1200 and 2000–2400 hours. This includes monitoring the ship's position, course, and speed to ensure safe navigation. 2
- Assisting in Navigation: They assist the Second Officer in correcting and maintaining nautical charts and publications, as well as in passage planning and distance calculations. This ensures that all navigational information is accurate and up-to-date. 2
- Safety Equipment Maintenance: The Third Officer is responsible for maintaining life-saving appliances (LSA) and firefighting equipment (FFE) on board. This includes conducting regular inspections and ensuring that all safety equipment is in good working condition. 2
- Communication Duties: They are tasked with maintaining communication with other ships and shore authorities, using the ship's radio equipment effectively. This includes writing appropriate entries in the official deck logbook and following the Master’s Night Order Book. 2
- Emergency Preparedness: The Third Officer must be prepared to respond to emergencies, including conducting drills and assisting in damage control procedures. They must understand distress signals and be familiar with emergency protocols. 2
- Training and Mentorship: The Third Officer may also assist in training deck cadets or other trainees on board, sharing knowledge and ensuring that all crew members are familiar with safety and operational procedures. 1
- Recordkeeping: They are responsible for maintaining accurate records of navigational activities, including entries in the ship’s deck logbook and navigational checklists, documenting all events that occur during their watch. 2
