The Spanish Medical Interpreter facilitates accurate, confidential, and culturally appropriate communication between healthcare providers and Spanish-speaking patients and families. This role is essential in ensuring equitable care for limited-English-proficient (LEP) patients by interpreting spoken and written medical information across clinical, hospital, and outpatient settings.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Nursing, Medicine, or a related healthcare field.
● Certification in Medical Interpretation or Translation (e.g., CMI, CHI, ATA, IMIA) strongly preferred.
● Minimum 2–3 years of professional medical interpretation or translation experience, ideally in healthcare or insurance settings.
● Proficiency in translating a variety of medical documents (e.g., medical records, discharge
summaries, prescriptions, educational materials, clinical trial content).
● Native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English (spoken and written).
● Strong command of medical terminology in both languages.
● Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
● High attention to detail, accuracy, and ethical standards; knowledge of HIPAA regulations is a plus.
● Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure.
● Prior experience in bilingual clinical environments or with Spanish-speaking patient populations is an asset.
Responsibilities:
● Interpret medical conversations between English-speaking staff and Spanish-speaking patients and family’s in-person, via phone, or video.
● Accurately translate patient histories, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, consent forms, and discharge instructions.
● Translate written medical documents and patient education materials as needed.
● Ensure use of correct medical terminology and maintain cultural context during interpretations.
● Clarify and verify information to avoid miscommunication affecting patient care or safety.
● Maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and institutional standards.
● Collaborate with healthcare teams to support patient understanding and satisfaction.
● Properly document interpretation services per organizational guidelines.
