As Senior Structural Steel Detailer you will take a lead role in delivering high-quality, fabrication-ready drawings across a range of commercial and industrial projects in New Zealand. This is a critical technical position for someone who combines deep detailing knowledge with NZ/AU construction and fabrication standards, excellent communication skills, and the ability to drive project outcomes from concept to completion. As a senior member of the team, you’ll play a key role in setting quality standards, mentoring junior detailers, and ensuring all detailing output supports workshop productivity, site constructability, and client satisfaction. You’ll have the confidence to work independently, solve complex problems, and represent the detailing function in project meetings and technical reviews.
- Take ownership of detailing for entire projects — from interpreting architectural and structural drawings to delivering final fabrication packages using TEKLA Structures.
- Lead coordination with engineers, architects, and project stakeholders to ensure all detailing work aligns with NZ/AU codes, site conditions, and fabrication constraints.
- Produce high-quality 3D models and detailed shop drawings for fabricated steelwork, including structural frames, stairs, balustrades, and custom metalwork.
- Review and quality-check drawings produced by junior or intermediate team members, providing technical guidance and mentoring.
- Manage and track RFIs, variations, and drawing revisions, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Participate in project coordination meetings remotely, and assist with interpreting or validating site measures where supported by local teams or digital tools (e.g. 3D scans, site photos).
- Contribute to production planning by coordinating with the workshop and erection teams to ensure sequencing and deadlines are realistic and achievable.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with the company’s QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) policies.
Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience as a Structural Steel Detailer, with a strong track record of delivering detailing projects in New Zealand and/or Australia.
- Expert-level proficiency with TEKLA Structures and understanding of NZ/AU fabrication and erection practices.
- Sound knowledge of NZ/AU construction codes and engineering standards, including AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS 5131, and ISO 9606.
- Strong ability to interpret and resolve complex architectural and structural coordination issues.
- Clear and confident communication skills — both written and verbal — with the ability to lead meetings and collaborate effectively with senior stakeholders.
- Competent with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, initiative, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and deliver to deadlines with minimal supervision.
