This Administrator is responsible for monitoring the client’s network after normal US business hours and performing work on *nix servers to increase reliability.
Necessary Skills:
- Proficiency with Unix/Linux command line
- Ability to use LAMP to set up websites
- Knowledge of routers, such as Cisco and Juniper
- Responsiveness to all alerts
- Proficiency in Perl
Responsibilities include:
Investigating circuits that are alerting for an outage:
- Check circuits on the client’s router and determine the cause if possible
- Call in a trouble ticket to the appropriate telco if the problem is not on the client’s side
- Follow up regularly with the telco to ensure prompt repair of service
Troubleshooting servers:
- Monitor resources and adjust configurations to prevent unnecessary alerts
- For example: respond if SSH is alerting because server load is too high during backups
- Ensure housekeeping tasks are up to date, including log rotations and backups
Updating servers:
- Migrate websites from servers running old versions of LAMP to newer servers
- Examine Perl scripts on older servers and determine what is needed to move them to newer servers
- Transfer script functionality to more modern servers
- Update existing servers as needed to keep applications current (e.g., DHCP, DNS, SSH)
